Case Studies

Since 2018, I've used strategic design, research, and product development to help deliver unprecedented value.

RESEARCH, UX, SYSTEM DESIGN

Building a collaborative CCIS (Command & Control Information System) for SAF users.

How to enhance the overall situation awareness for multi-services collaborating on a single source of truth?

CHALLENGE

Navigating the complex task of data aggregation, input, and representation from various user domains, like air, land, and sea, is an demanding process, especially if accuracy in reporting the defence health status to higher up is imperative.

PROCESS

User interviews, Workflow mapping, personas, affinity diagrams, contextual observation, concept sketches, wireframes, high fidelity prototypes, usability testing

SOLUTION

Unified design with modularity and flexibility for all types of live information display to be collate, pivot, share and present.

OUTCOME

  • Live information from single point of truth

  • Live collaboration during situation appraisal

  • Time Saving at Command Post: 2hrs to 15mins of reporting preparation

Establishing proper design culture and support for sustainability within the Design Innovation Team.

How can we optimize people, processes, and craft to amplify the value and impact of design in DSTA?

CHALLENGE

UX is often out of the loop in the agile development process. The design pair often finds themselves overwhelmed with complexities and struggles with no proper design process in their project.

PROCESS

Internal team research, User interviews, Surveys, Workflow mapping, Co-creation sessions with design and dev leads

SOLUTIONS

Curate the efficient processes, touch points and proper rituals that enable scalable solutions for rapidly escalating complexities in DSTA context, so that designers can focus on researching and designing.

OUTCOME

  • Created DSTA's Design Ops and Dev Ops Playbook

  • Aligned expectations for design process and clarity for each role's responsibility in each activity.

Systematising multi-project C3 Design System to align and scale design.

How to build a unified C3 design system that can effectively scale for different types of digital products and still provide a consistent, improved experience?

CHALLENGE

In this rapidly-evolving tech environment, the diverse programming languages used in distinct projects pose as unique challenges for design team to build a unified design system.

PROCESS

Design studios, competitive analysis, interactive prototypes, usability testing, annotated mockups, production CSS styling

ACTION

Once we comprehended the tech landscape, including the tech boundaries that each project faced, and investigated how major tech players (e.g. Google, Netflix, Facebook) operate their design systems, we formulated more advanced approaches to enhance our preliminary design system, so it would fit our requirements and the products in our system.

OUTCOME

All 9 projects driven by the single design system - this will enable quicker ramp-ups, easier maintenance and future scaling for designers and developers, in addition to offering an unvarying journey for users.

Building the right team and capabilities for design to flourish.

How to grow a small startup team in a large gov organisation?

CHALLENGE

Due to the gap in experience and diversity in technical backgrounds, the design team members struggle to articulate their individual roles and strengths to each other. As such, confusion started to emerge in the team over communication of design decisions.

ACTION

  • Create a more well-defined career paths

  • Make new changes to team structure

  • Better support the overlooked areas (e.g onboarding of new hires, lack of engagement) within the team that we identified.

PROCESS

Design studios, Surveys, Co-creation workshops, Project Workflow, Skill-mapping

OUTCOME

  • Promoted multiple team members to more senior and management positions within the course of 6+ months.

  • DI team grew its capacity by 3x+ during my tenure.

Designing Decision Support System for Specialised Domains.

How to support broad, unstructured user goals or nonlinear workflows and efficient decision-making?

CHALLENGE

Formulating high-level decisions has become more complicated due to the increased burden of data complexity and cognitive fatigue, making it difficult to construct a clear picture of the situation in order to make informed decisions.

PROCESS

User interviews, Workflow mapping, personas, affinity diagrams, contextual observation, concept sketches, wireframes, high fidelity prototypes, usability testing

SOLUTION

Through a reconfigured architecture of component-based design, users are now empowered to develop their own monitoring dashboard.

Additionally, the integration of data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) provides users with knowledge-based AI to support decision making, virtual assistants to furnish pertinent information in a timely fashion, and reinforcement learning to enable optimal action selection in real time.

OUTCOME

  • 12x reduction in task completion time (drastic improvement in usability)

  • Reduced complexity and cognitive overload focusing

  • Gaining actionable insights for the users
